The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, has drawn global attention towards intolerance and racism that is unfolding in many European countries amid fierce debate over illegal immigrant workers who were heading towards the continent in search of a better future.

Will fundamental rights matter if one, two or more states decided to intrude into an individual’s life for a terrorism-related inquiry? Most probably not because of a simple reason: terrorists operating across borders continue to abuse cyberspace and proliferate their toxic ideologies to enlist physical support for their causes.

The China Pakistan Economic Corridor will act as an economic force-multiplier for South Asia with India a major beneficiary connecting it across the land bridge of Pakistan with Central Asia and the Middle East.

Instead of being every few years as a nation up the creek without a paddle, Pakistan must clearly and unambiguously state its intention to protect Saudi Arabia by putting its “boots on the ground” in the Kingdom.

The US-Iran deal opens new possibilities for the nuclear-armed India and Pakistan. If US and Iran can bury the acrimonious past, why cant Islamabad and New Delhi chart the same way when it comes to weapons of mass destruction.

Notwithstanding the apparent bonhomie of religious affinity Pakistan’s client-patron relationship across the civil-military broad spectrum with the Arab countries is basically transactional in nature. But Pakistan has to be part of the solution, not part of the problem. With the complicated contradictions inherent, this detrimental and dangerous situation needs handling with extreme care.

The weapons being sold to Islamabad include advanced AH-1Z Viper Attack Helicopters and AGM-114R Hellfire II Missiles.

Pakistan is in a Catch-22 situation, damned if it joins the Saudi-led so-called “Sunni Coalition” and damned if it does not.

Pakistan is at a dangerous crossroads, lip-service to the rule of law and accountability thereof erodes the credibility of governance that it desperately needs.

If realized, the Pakistan-China Economic Corridor will not only benefit Pakistan in terms of improvement of its economy and security condition, but also contribute to regional peace, stability and prosperity.
