Europe and Iran both want to save the nuclear deal. But each side needs to fully understand the other’s point of view if they are to avoid dangerous miscalculations.

With Russia and China supporting a possible Turkish, Iranian and Pakistani bloc the danger is that potentially a "Baghdad Pact" in reverse can happen. The three countries have the largest non-Arab Armed forces battle-hardened and intact, does it make sense to push nuclear Pakistan into such an alignment? 

If the deal breaks down in full, tensions across the Middle East could escalate to a dangerous level, as players on all sides rush to recalibrate their positions.

If the Iran nuclear deal eventually leads to a withdrawal of sanctions, the results will be increased Iranian supplies, forcing prices lower by some $10 per barrel. That could go a long way in changing the political structure of the Middle East, reducing West's dependency on its traditional allies in the region. Washington wants Iran positioned as a competitor to Russia for EU and Asian energy markets, and as a bulwark against Russian and Chinese expansion.

International diplomacy has witnessed yet another astonishing event – this time around with the seven-nation accord on Iranian nuclear ambitions announced on July 14.
