Educational reform is certainly the need of the hour in Pakistan. The Ministry of Education is under pressure to produce results. But the development of a single national curriculum that lacks the consent of the provinces is counterproductive.

The political elite can turn Pakistan around only if it handles education on a war-footing and start meaningful reform of the sector. When will they crack down on the moth that is eating away the vitals of the education sector, stunting real intellectual development?

Unable to cope with increasing demand for higher education, more and more students from India are heading to the West. New statistics show that offers of admission to Indian post-graduate students are up 25 per cent for 2013-14 from the previous year. But the bigger problem is that majority of these students are staying abroad after completing education, causing brain-drain — a bad news for India’s high-tech economy aspirations.

Poor public services in many West African countries, with already dire human development indicators, are under constant pressure from pervasive corruption.
