The economic picture in Pakistan is not as bright as the government claims, but nor is it as dark as the critics suggest. Economic performance was mixed in 2015 and will in all likelihood remain mixed in 2016. The Pakistan economy is not in crisis, but it is not yet out of the woods.

The China Pakistan Economic Corridor has the potential to fundamentally alter the China–Pakistan relationship. Until now China has had the luxury of taking the position that Pakistan’s domestic woes were none of its business. But with the security of thousands of nationals and billions of dollars of investments at stake, China may find itself increasingly drawn into Pakistan’s politics and security concerns.

Advice from China­ to Pakistan­ is unequivocally clear and categorical: develop consensus on the proposed China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
